A Hopi Katsina doll by Wilson Tewaquatewa (1891-1960)
This is an exceptionally large doll, carved by Wilson Tewaquatewa, the last chief of Old Oraibi. He did not believe in carving actual katsinam, so his dolls were often based on figments of his own imaginantion. His dolls are often characterized by mono-chromonic color of yellow ochre and black and white patterns of dots. They are prized for their unique sensibility in interpreting the various katsinam that are carved.
